The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has responded to remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who claimed that Nigerians have rejected Atiku, urging him to step away from politics.
In his response, Atiku stated he would not engage in “gutter politics” by exchanging words with Wike.
Wike had said: “I hear Atiku Abubakar said that Nigerians have rejected us in Rivers State. You, who have contested and failed woefully, Nigerians have rejected you; therefore, go back home.”
Reacting through his spokesman, Paul Ibe, Atiku criticized Wike and his allies for playing politics with the struggles of Nigerians.
Ibe’s statement reads: “We have noted Mr. Nyesom Wike’s latest outburst, another of his theatrics. Normally, we wouldn’t respond, but silence might be misread.
“We remain calm, aware that Nigerians are familiar with Wike’s actions, which are rooted in his bitterness from losing to the Wazirin Adamawa in the 2022 presidential primaries.
“Wike’s comments are frivolous, driven by personal grudges. If he believes Nigerians are satisfied with the current state of the nation under this administration, it speaks volumes about where his priorities lie. His focus clearly rests on his interests, not the welfare of the people. His preoccupation with Rivers’ local matters instead of his ministerial duties underscores this.
“While he attempts to shift attention with his unfounded claims, we stay focused on real issues affecting Nigerians. It’s evident Mr. Wike’s agenda is self-serving, neglecting the genuine concerns of the nation. On the other hand, our dedication remains steadfast, committed to the betterment of the people.
“Wike seems to enjoy spinning fantasies, indulging in his whims, and broadcasting his attacks through paid live TV. However, we will not engage in mudslinging. We choose to maintain our dignity and rise above the fray, while others revel in the mud.”
