In a significant ruling ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in Rivers State, a court has mandated the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to use the 2023 voters’ register for conducting the elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.
As part of its directives, the court has ordered the police and other security agencies to provide adequate security during and after the polls to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process. The ruling also compels the Rivers State Government, Governor Sim Fubara, and RSIEC to strictly comply with the July 11 Supreme Court judgment, which outlined critical guidelines for the elections.
The court emphasized that the three-month timeline set for the elections remains sacrosanct, urging all parties to adhere to the stipulated timeframe to ensure the smooth conduct of the local government polls.
This ruling reaffirms the commitment to transparency and security in the electoral process, further underscoring the importance of maintaining order and compliance with judicial decisions.
